According to enFilmbase’s China film boxoffice statistics, the mainland boxoffice gross in the 41st week of 2012(October 8-14) was $34.08 million, a 46% decrease from the previous week. Moviegoers this week totaled 6.26 million, a 43% drop when compared to the previous week’s numbers.

Taken 2 topped the boxoffice chart with a weekly gross of $8.98 million, for a total gross of $11.51 million. The newly released Australian film Bait 3D hauled in $7.91 million over its first three days in release, constituting a pretty strong debut that was good enough for second place. Taichi 0 grossed $3.15 million for a new total of $21.22 million, while Looper grossed $2.54 million for a new total of $19.25 million. Through last Sunday, the boxoffice revenue of Double Xposure reached $15.98 million, or over 100 million yuan.

With five films competing against each other, the marketplace performances during the eight-day holiday were much lower than expected. The same was true for this last week. The total mainland boxoffice gross in the 41st week has dropped almost 50% from the “National Day Golden Week” statistics.

As can be seen from the boxoffice chart above, Taichi 0 was dethroned by two new films after holding the top spot for the previous two weeks. Double Xposure earned $2.92 million over the past seven days, maintain the strongest hold among the five films released in the Golden Week. The commercial success maybe attributed to its dynamic marketing strategy, which included discounted tickets at Wanda theaters and heavy television advertising on The Voice of China.

The Assassins, starring Chow Yun-Fat, is well on its way to joining the 100 million yuan boxoffice club. Although Dangerous Liaisons failed to perform well in the Chinese mainland, it may still emerge successful from oversea territory receipts.

Starring Liam Neeson, the Hollywood title Taken 2 added $8.98 million to its overall gross. It has already made significantly more than its predecessor. Since Chinese audiences will see the release of more foreign films during the remainder of October (including Total Recall, Twilight and The Bourne Legacy). As a result, domestic films have to reschedule their release dates to avoid the tough competition. That is why ten films chose to debut earlier on October 12.

According to enFilmbase statistics, Taken 2 had reigned over mainland boxoffice screenings, enjoying 20% of the market share in terms of total number of screenings, which was followed by Taichi 0 and Double Xposure both with 11% market share. Looper and Bait 3D took in 10% and 9% respectively. Although White Deer Plain only took up 1% of the screenings, its average admissions per screen stayed fairly high for the whole week.

Next week (Oct. 15-21, 2012), the films below are set to open in Mainland China. The novel adaptation Anna Karenina and the Canadian comedy L’appât are scheduled for October 16. Mystery, the controversial film directed by Lou Ye, will finally hit theaters on October 19. The Sci-fi blockbuster Total Recall and the war movie Battlefield Orchid will be released on October 20, while the mainstream film Nan Ni Wan will debut on October 21.
