Mainland China Box Office Performance in Week 49
According to China box office statistics by enbase, mainland box office gross in Week 49 (Nov 27-Dec 4, 2011) reached $31.85 million, showing 4% box office drop from last month, 14% increase compared to the same time last year. Moviegoers in this week counted as 6.40 million in total, 5% slump compared to last month. Spring Festival comes early this year, local film market has entered New Year holiday season along with quite a few movies racing to get released to meet the crowds. “White Vengeance” took $12.58 million at the Mainland box office over six days, catching number one spot easily. Chinese New Year hit “East Meets West 2011” dropped to second place with gross $3.24 million. Hollywood thriller “Priest” debuted $3.10 million ranking as top three in its six days run. Local surprise hit “Love is Not Blind” accumulated to $52.51 million (RMB 0.34 billion). Domestic films market share continue rising up to 67% comparing to last week’s 54% correspondingly.
The release of eight fresh films in this week, marked the New Year holiday season officially began. The historical Chinese film “White Vengeance” took the lead from the fierce battle of film market. The film debuted $12.58 million which is the best opening week gross for director Daniel Lee. Films with variety of genres race to get released to meet the crowds since last week, that made no film the big winner. “East Meets West 2011”dropped 60% from last week in terms of box office, same as “Love is Not Blind” which just added $2.15 million this week for a total of $52.51 million. Even taking advantage from the “Happy Ghost” movie franchise, “Magic to Win” just debuted to poor performance of $1.53 million in its four day run. Same day released film “Cold Steel” and “A Big Deal” earned $0.69 million and $0.64 million in box office respectively in their first week.
Take a look at the imported film market. Hollywood thriller “Priest” debuted $3.10 million in its six day run as the best imported film of this week. “The Adventures of Tintin” scored $2.58 million in this week, adding to $18.19 million (RMB 0.12 billion) in its total gross. Magic adventure story “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” has a Hollywood star-studded cast, including Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell, with a debut of $1.17 million.
According to the data published by enbase, “White Vengeance” ruled the screening rate of mainland market enjoying 27% of that. “East Meets West 2011”took 13% in the market, showing just a 25% decline comparing to last week. But due to low audience attendance rate, this Chinese New Year fantasy suffered a 59% drop in box office income. “Priest” and “Love is Not Blind” enjoyed 10% and 8% screening rate respectively this week.
