Mainland Box Office Chart for Week 32, 2012
According to enFilmbase’s China film boxoffice statistics, the mainland boxoffice gross in the 32th week of 2012 (Aug 6-12) was 51.97 million, a growth of 14% from the previous week. Moviegoers this week totaled 9.6 million, a 16% increase when compared to the previous week numbers.
The espionage film "The Silent War" had a great debut with $19.84 million over six days in release, capturing the top spot of the boxoffice chart. “Ice Age: Continental Drift” dropped to number two, adding $12.47 million for a total of $57.32 million in its third week of release. Domestic animated film “I Love Wolffy” raked in $6.03 million over three-day-theater run. This past week, domestic films reigned supreme over the boxoffice market, accounting for 65% of the weekly gross.
Writer-directors Siu Fai Mak and Felix Chong have been joined together to create a bunch of smash hit which acclaimed on both critical and commercial success. “The Silent War” is their latest entry. The espionage film hauled in $19.84 million over six days in release, which is likely to break the domestic boxoffice record for a Chinese political thriller. The film is adapted from the novel <Plot Against> by Chinese author Mai Xia, whose work also inspired Chen Kuo Fu's 2009 film “The Message”.
"Ice Age: Continental Drift” was kicked out from the top spot, sitting at number two of the boxoffice chart with $ 12.47 million, while it totaled $ 57.32 million by far. The fourth installment is very likely to become the top-grossing animated film of 2012 in mainland market.
The bellwether of homegrown animated films- “Pleasant Goat” franchise, never failed on boxoffice market. The latest installment of “Pleasant Goat” series- "I Love Wolffy” collected $6.03 million over three days in release. The protagonist of the live-action animated film is the main antagonist of the series-Wolffy (or “Grey Wolf”). Its production company Creative Power Entertaining carried out the strategy that develop a new theme revolved around the grey wolf, who used to be the main antagonist of the series, aiming to integrate the "Pleasant Goat” brands and preserve the brand vitality.
"The Mechanic”, which is a flat-fee imported film, added $4.75 million for a total of $12.67 million over the past week. Hollywood action title “Lock-Out” collected $3.97 million over six days in release. Thriller “Bunshinsaba” took in $0.22 million, while it totaled $9.52 million since debuted four weeks ago.
According to enFilmbase statistics, “The Silent War” ruled over mainland boxoffice screenings, enjoying 23% of the market share in terms of total number of screenings, followed by "Ice Age: Continental Drift” and “The Mechanic”, which took in 18% and 12%, respectively. Animated film “I Love Wolffy” just took 8% of the weekly screenings, though the smash hit enjoyed the highest average admissions per screen of 31 persons per screen over the past week.
Detective film "The Bullet Vanishes”, which is produced by Yee Tung-Shing and directed by Law Chi-Leung, will hit the silver screens on 14 August with high expectation. Ancient –costumed comedy “The Lion Roars 2” is another highly anticipated film for the coming week, which is going to release on 17 August. Jean Jacques Annaud's war epic "Black Gold" will start its mainland theater run on 18 August. Next week the following films are set to hit mainland theaters.
