According to enFilmbase’s China film boxoffice statistics, mainland boxoffice gross in the 26th week (Jun. 25-Jul. 01, 2012) reached $72.37 million, a 69% surge from last week. Moviegoers this week totaled 12.06 million, also up 53% when compared to the numbers from last week.

Big-budget domestic hit “Painted Skin:The Resurrection” debuted at number one at the weekly boxoffice chart in mainland China with a stronger-than-expected $47.43 million over its first four days in release, accounting for 65.5% of the total weekly gross. “The Hunger Games” continued its solid performance, hauling in $4.92 million, which was good enough for second place in its third week of release. Another local title “Black & White Episode I” brought in $4.76 million and finished the week in third place. This past week, domestic films as a whole accounted for 81% of the weekly gross, a robust growth when compared to previous weeks.

Huayi Brothers’ "Painted Skin: The Resurrection", has set a bunch of boxoffice records in mainland China this past week with its groundbreaking performance, where it had the biggest all time opening day (as well as the biggest all time opening week).  Painted Skin overtook “The Great Magician”, which up until this week was leading all 2012 domestic film releases in both on boxoffice receipts and critical acclaim.  Painted Skin: The Resurrection is a supernatural thriller, with elements of action, romance, comedy and strong visual effects. Regardless of mixed reviews among audiences, the smash hit has swept the mainland boxoffice with a surprising $47.43 million over four days in release.

In 2008, "Painted Skin" (2008), directed by Gordon Chan, made approximately $33.96 million during its theatrical run in China. "Painted Skin: The Resurrection" reunites most of the original cast but is not an official sequel.

The success of “Painted Skin: The Resurrection” affected the remaining mainland boxoffice releases adversely.“The Hunger Games”, which had reigned supreme for the past two weeks, suffered a drop of 55% when compared to last week’s numbers, adding $4.92 million for a total of $26.3 million in its third week of release.  Since most 3D screens were taken over by “Painted Skin: The Resurrection”, "Madagascar 3” took in just $3.64 million. Its 24 day total sits at just under $30 million., Other films opening this week faced similar challenges.  Animated feature film “Seer II” gained $3.18 million over its first four days in release, compared to its original entry“Seer” (2011)which made $4.30 million over its first four days. “GG.BOND Hatching”, another animated film, brought in $1.18 million through four days in release.

According to enFilmbase statistics, “Painted Skin:The Resurrection” dominated mainland boxoffice screenings, taking over 25% of the market share in terms of total number of screenings, (including the largest number of 3D screens). As a result of "Painted Skin 2" later 28 June start, other films screened those days suffered a sharp drop inscreenings. "Black & White Episode I” and “The Hunger Games” took in 12% and 11% respectively. “Madagascar 3”, "Motorway” and “Seer II” took an additional 7% of the weekly screenings for each title, though “Motorway” endured lower average admissions per screen.

Next week the following films are set to hit mainland theaters, all of which are domestic titles. The most anticipated film should be “Caught in the Web”, which is directed by renowned director Kaige Chen, starring YuanyuanGao, Chen Yao and Taiwanese rising star Mark Chao. The film is set to be released on 6 July.
