China Box Office: 'Captain America: Civil War' Tops Again
According to enbase’s China film box office statistics, mainland box office gross in the 19th week (May 9-15, 2016) reached $95.72 million (RMB 624 million), 44% lower than last week, down 42% on year-on-year basis. The market shrunk overall.
"Captain America: Civil War" won the week crown, with $60.11 million in the week. After 10 days that put it on a cumulative of more than $156.89 million.
"Book of Love" took the week runner-up position with $13.03 million. Thanks to the cumulative of $111.52 million, its director Xue Xiaolu became the Chinese female director whose single work won the highest box office.
Starring Ryan Reynolds, both "Criminal" and "Self/less " ranked in the top five, but the numbers are not high. " Criminal " stole $7.99 million. "Self/less" took $4.09 million. Currently, these kind of importing films with mediocre reputation are no longer attractive to Chinese audience.
It is worth mentioning that the domestic art-house film "Song of the Phoenix" was opened wider in its second week with $3.84 million box office. Because Fang Li, a producer of the film, kneeled down to beg for more showings, which makes the film receive much more awareness and showtime arrangements. Besides, the film also gained good reviews from moviegoers and critics.
"Captain America 3" retained the top spot at the Chinese box office in the whole week, holding off others. "Song Of The Phoenix" made a swift ascent to the fifth top.
