Mainland Box Office Chart for Week 21, 2012
According to enFilmbase’s China film boxoffice statistics, mainland boxoffice gross in the 21th week (May 21-27, 2012) reached $44.1 million, up 19% from last week. Moviegoers this week totaled 7.10 million, for an increase of 21% when compared to last week’s numbers.
"Men in Black III”, the third film in Sony’s billion-dollar sci-fi franchise, invaded mainland theaters this past weekend with a mission that others had failed to achieve: knock “The Avengers” off their number one boxoffice perch. Mission accomplished. “Men in Black III” debuted at the top spot with a massive $25 million after just three days in theaters. But “The Avengers”, is far from down for the count. It contributed a weekly gross of $9.98 million for a cume of $83.17 million. This week, mainland boxoffice was undeniably dominated by a string of Hollywood titles, which accounted for 91.6% of the weekly total gross.
Benefiting from good word of mouth from filmgoers, Taiwan’s epic “Warriors of the Rainbow” led the domestic chart with $0.73 million this week, giving it a $2.34 million cume after fourteen days in release.
"Men in Black III” took over the mainland theaters after opening on May 25, hauling in $25million over three days in release. Worldwide, the film has accumulated $203 million in boxoffice gross so far, which still leaves it firmly behind “The Avengers” on the all time American highest opening weekend boxoffice chart. According to enFilmbase’s China film boxoffice statistics, the first two titles in the Men in Black series received better receptions offshore than in their North American debut. The first film (released in 1997) grossed $250.7 million across North America versus a total of $338.7 million from foreign territories while its first sequel (2002) compiled $190.4 million domestically and $251.4 million internationally.
Ranking number one on the local charts after two weeks in release, “Warriors of the Rainbow” brought in an unexpectedly decent boxoffice gross this week with $0.73 million, for a total of $2.34 million through fourteen days. This week saw five newly released mandarin language films competing at the box office, but none of these even debuted in the top ten weekly boxoffice charts.
According to enFilmbase statistics, monthly boxoffice gross for the month of April (totaled $161.211 million) is higher than that of January’s (grossed $150.025 million) this year. That’s thanks largely in part to the incredible performance of “Titanic 3D”, (as well as higher ticket prices generated by 3D titles). But if you look at the chart below, you will find that average admissions per screen of April is slightly less than that of January. It indicates that the mainland film market is experiencing slugish growth. As of May 27, boxoffice gross of May just reached $115 million, a disappointing number for the so called booming film market. This may be a result of oversaturation in the market, where a string of massive Hollywood titles have all been released in such a concentrated period of time.
Next week (May. 28- Jun.03, 2012), the following films will be released in Mainland China.
