Mainland Box Office Chart for Week 18, 2012
According to enbase’s China film boxoffice statistics, mainland boxoffice gross in the 18th week (April 30-May 06, 2012) reached $63.37million, a growth of 28% from previous week. Moviegoers this week totaled 10.38million, also up 28% when compared to last week’s numbers.
'The Avengers debuted at the top spot with an astonishing $19million in estimated ticket sales after only two days in mainland release. "Titanic 3D", which held the top spot for the past three weeks, came in second place with $14.09million and a four-week total of $149.36million. Another big hit over the past two weeks,“Battleship”, finished third with $12.52million, bringing its mainland 19-day total to $45.54million. This week, mainland boxoffice continued to be dominated by a string of Hollywood titles, which accounted for 72% of the weekly total gross. On local film side, "Guns N' Roses” ranked the highest with $9.6million in its second week in release.
"The Avengers”great week at boxoffice started with solid midnight crowds on Friday in America. The superheroes team-up smashed the country’s single weekend record with a $207million debut,by far the biggest weekend opening ever (shooting past the previous record of $169million for the debut of last year’s “Harry Potter” finale).“The Avengers” is the fastest movie ever to reach $100million, $150million, and $200million, and it set new records for Saturday with $69.6millionand Sunday with $57.1 million grosses in the US alone. Directed by Joss Whedon, “The Avengers” features Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.
"The Avengers” also surpassed previous superhero feature title records in Mainland China. After only two days, “The Avengers”earned an estimated $19million in gross admissions revenue. Through its first two days in China,“The Avengers” has already garnered more than "Thor” ($14million),“Captain America: The First Avenger” ($14.46million) and “Iron Man” ($13.23million). It's still behind“Iron Man 2” ($26million), though it is expected to pass the sequel next week.
"Titanic 3D” came in second place this week, adding another $14.09million for a total of $149.36million. Based on the boxoffice it has already accumulated, the 3D remake of the 100-year-old tragedy could reasonably finish with nearly $158million from Mainland China alone.
Local films faced tough challenges in a market strewn with Hollywood titles that certainly threaten their survival. “Guns N' Roses”was the only release that earned a decent return of $9.6million this week, bringing its gross over 14-days in release to $20.07million. The remaining local titles suffered relatively meager box office.
According to enbase statistics, “Battleship”continued to dominate mainland boxoffice screenings this week, enjoying 20% of the market share in terms of total number of screenings, followed by “Guns N' Roses” which took 18% of the weekly screenings.“Titanic 3D”took an additional 15% of the weekly screenings. Regardless of its late start on May 5, “The Avengers” still managed to take 11% of total numbers of screenings, at the cost of the other films (which lost screens as a result). The superhero-alliance extravaganza beat“Titanic 3D”in terms of boxoffice receipts, benefiting from both a high audience attendance per screening average of 74 persons per screening (which was twice as that of “Titanic 3D”), and an average ticket price of RMB 44 ( Approx. $7).
Next week (May. 07-13, 2012), the films below will be released in Mainland China.
