Mainland Box Office Chart for Week 16, 2012
According to enbase’s China film boxoffice statistics, the mainland boxoffice gross for week 16 (April 16-22, 2012) reached $69.84million, down 19% compared to the previous week. Moviegoers this week totaled 11.03million, also decreasing 14% from last week’s numbers.
"Titanic 3D”easily maintained the top spot for the second week in a row with a driving weekly gross of $42.99million, bringing its total gross to $117.26million over the 13 days from its opening. And continuing with the vessel-related theme, “Battleship” generated $19.4million since it sailed into mainland theaters on April 18, sitting at second place on the chart. “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” debuted in third place with $3.87million boxoffice receipts. Hollywood blockbusters took the top three spots on the list this week and accounted for 95% of the mainland boxoffice.
Along with the openings of “Battleship” and “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance”, the film market was dominated by Hollywood titles this week. The top five grossing films were all Western imports, accounting for a whopping 97% of the mainland boxoffice in this 16th week of 2012.
Released on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of that majestic cruiseliner, the 3D version of “Titanic” has been successfully revived, hauling in $117.26million over the 13 days from its release; the movie is certainly not sinking. Even the director himself, James Cameron, expressed amazement that in just two weeks Titanic 3D’s boxoffice take surpassed the film’s total revenue from many other parts of the world.
Renowned director Peter Berg’s latest entry “Battleship” surged past $19.4million over five days in release. Inspired by Hasbro’s classic naval combat game, the epic action-adventure film has been dubbed by the film studio as “the naval version of the‘Transformers’series”. "The film was shot on real battleships during a joint naval drill of 16 nations in the Pacific," Peter Berg said at the premiere in Beijing on April 15, a month prior to the North American release.
The other opener, the animation sequel, “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance,” brought in $3.87million over three days in release, which almost amounts to the total gross of the original version. (The total mainland gross of “Ghost Rider” was $3.83million in 2007.)
Due to the strong performance of Hollywood blockbusters, local flicks screening in the same time slots hardly survived in boxoffice market. “Love in the Buff” brought in $0.31million this week, grossing over $11.34million in 24 days. “Love on That Day” and “Lost” took in $0.25million and $0.19million, respectively, this week, receiving an unenviable five viewers-per-screening on average. Thriller “Blood Stained Shoes” has garnered an impressive $7.04million over 23 days in release.
According to enbase statistics, “Titanic” 3D continued to dominate mainland boxoffice screenings this week, receiving 36% of the market share in terms of total number of screenings. Not having a 3D version, “Battleship” missed out on being exhibited on 3D screenings, obviously. But that caused “Battleship” to be ranked behind “Titanic 3D”in terms of total number of screenings. “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance”, "R.T.T.” and “Ninja” each took 7% of the weekly screenings.
The film “Guns N’Roses”, directed by NingHao, and “An Inaccurate Memoir”, directed by Yang Shupeng, are very anticipated–these “Sixth Generation” Chinese directors may take over the mainland screenings in the coming week.
