According to enbase’s China film boxoffice statistics, mainland boxoffice gross in the 11th week (Mar 12-18, 2012) reached $ 31.87 million, up 8% from last week. Moviegoers this week totaled 5.58 million, an increase of 2% when compared to last week.

Walt Disney’s mega-budget science-fiction movie "John Carter of Mars" opened on March 16 and took in $14.03million over its first three days at Mainland China theaters, easily leading the chart.“A Simple Life” maintained its strong performance ranking number two for the second week in a row with a weekly gross of $3.51million, and a total $8.73million through 11 days. Another Hong Kong film “Night Fall” debuted at third place with $3.13million after four days of release. Hollywood films accounted for 70% of the mainland boxoffice in the 11th week.

3D space adventure film"John Carter of Mars," debuted in mainland theaters this week with a solid $14.03million boxoffice cume through three days. The mega-budget Hollywood blockbuster is adapted from Edgar Rice Burroughs’s pulp novel “A Princess of Mars", and directed by Pixar's Andrew Stanton, who made an amazing string of Pixar hits including “Wall-E” and “Toy Story”. The ambitious epic cost a reported $250million to produce and another $100million in marketing costs, which created eye-popping special effects and grand battle scenes. But the film disappointed American audiences and found only mixed reviews among critics. “John Carter of Mars” earned just $ 53.23million after two weeks in American theaters.  In Mainland China, however, the film easily topped the weekly gross chart in its opening week and will likely continue to perform well into next week.

Benefiting from a great reception from both critics and audiences, "A Simple Life" achieved an impressive gross of $3.51million for its second week. Directed by Zhou Xianyang, Hong Kong’s new thriller “Night Fall” also grossed $3.13million this week.

According to enbase statistics,“A Simple Life” dominated mainland boxoffice screenings this week, enjoying 17% of the market share in terms of total number of screenings. Regardless of a late start on March 16, Hollywood sci-fi epic “John Carter of Mars”took an additional 16% of screenings this week, roughly the same number of screenings as that of“A Simple Life”. Benefiting from a high audience attendance and an average RMB 40Yuan admission per person (average admission per person for “A Simple Life” is RMB 31Yuan), “John Carter of Mars” brought in almost four times as much boxoffice as “A Simple Life” this week, and “John Carter” was only in theaters for three days.“Night Fall” and “War Horse” took 12% and 11% of the weekly screenings respectively.

Next week (Mar. 19-25, 2012), the films below will be released in Mainland China. With Local comedy “You and I” first hitting theaters on March 20, seven films are scheduled to opening next week.
