Week 18 Preview: ‘Chappie’ Opens During Slow Week

2015/5/5 11:50:00(Beijing Time)    by: Entgroup Consulting

China’s box office is about slow down for a bit in between the record-breaking success of Furious 7 and the impending release of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Three new titles open this week, and Chappie is clearly the strongest of the bunch.

Still, it won’t be easy for Chappie to succeed considering that Furious 7 and Silent Separation (You Are My Sunshine) are both going in strong in the market. Furious 7 is up to $372 million, while Silent Separation has earned $37.7 million. Chappie director Neill Blomkamp scored a modest hit in 2013 with Elysium, a sci-fi flick that earned $26 million in China. Blomkamp’s film will be helped by a cast with strong appeal in China: Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel and Sigourney Weaver. According to EntGroup’s EFMT Marketing Index, Chappie has the highest awareness and intent to purchase levels of all the week’s new releases. Globally, Chappie has earned only $82 million up to this point.

Also opening this week: War on a String, a gangster film, and The King of Tibetan Antelope, a family-friendly animated film. Expectations are low for both titles.
