Week 9: 'Big Hero 6' Won China's Heart in First Full Week

According to EBOT statistics, mainland boxoffice gross in the 9th week (Mar. 2-8, 2015) reached $139.64million, down 43% w-o-w, yet up 125% y-o-y. Moviegoers this week totaled 23.7million, with slide of 39% from the 8th week.

Disney’s “Big Hero 6” won the top of the boxoffice from Lunar New Year hit, “The Man from Macau II” in the 9th week in mainland China.  With over 5milion moviegoers rushing to the cinema, "Big Hero 6” embraced another $30million in its second week, taking 21.4% of the market. In the second place of weekly gross, “The Man from Macau II” still booked 166063 showings, the highest in last week. “Wolf Totem” weekly earned $20.67million and accumulated $100milion for 18 days in theatres. Jackie Chan’s “Dragon Blade” was ranked No. 5 with $13.14million from 100 thousand showings.

Coming along with Britain’s Prince William, “Paddington” took the sixth place and gained $7.48milion in first 4 days. Chinese fantasy, “Zhong Kui: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal” totaled $63.62.97milllion boxoffice revenue with additional $5.43million, which was followed by other three domestic films: “The Right Mistake” --$3.66million, “Beijing, New York”--$1.93million and "Triumph in the Skies”--$1.63million.

EBOT statistics shows that “Jupiter Ascending” notched up $9.2million daily gross, the week’s peak of the 9th week market. The sci-fi debuted on Friday with $6.7million and rapidly climbed to $9.2million on Saturday, which was $1million further ahead of the second boxoffice earner, “Big Hero 6”. Generally, the films opened on first day of Lunar New Year such as “The Man from Macau II” was trending down to their lowest in the 9th week when "Jupiter Ascending" came in.
