Valentine’s Day is a time for movie companies to reap huge profits from lovers. As this year’s Valentine’s Day draws near, Chinese films are lining up to take their share of dinner-and-a-movie profits. There are seven films released in this week competing to win lovers’ hearts at box office.

Tom Cruise’s “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” had no problem leading the box office chart for the third week in a row, adding $21.44 million for mainland total of $76.65 million, 46% slumped from last week.  Imported 3D effective adventure-film “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” debuted $15.23 million in its first week, ranking in the second place. With the strong performance “Journey 2”enjoyed the most screening times and a high audience attendance over this week. Looking back how much its prequel “Journey to the Center of the Earth” got at the box office, it no hard to come to the conclusion that “Journey 2”still has a long way to go. In mainland market, “Journey to the Center of the Earth” was the first 3D film that showed on silver screen which released in September 2008. That gave rise to the popularity of 3D films in this region. Even considering just a hundred 3D screens available at that time in mainland, “Journey to the Center of the Earth” grossed $9.88 million domestically. The eye-popping 3D vision effect and the joint of “The Rock” Dwayne Johnson will guarantee the family friendly adventure film to take in much more in coming weeks at the box office.

In this week “Mission Impossible 4”and “Journey 2”together ruled the mainland chart, accounting for 72% in this market. Local romance flicks dropped out of the race under the stressful circumstance. Commercial Love story “I DO” starring Bingbing Li and Honglei Sun debuted a mild $3.16 million. Directed by Johnny To, film “Romancing in Thin Air” just took in $1.84 million over its first week. That should blame to its low audience attendance in the opening day, and since then the daily screening times of the film has been cut down. Another Johnny To’s film “Life Without Principle” earned $1.67 million in this week.

According to statistics by enbase, “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” dominated screening time slot for another week, enjoying 32% of screening time slot share. The situation changed since 10th, Feb as quite a few fresh films released in theaters on that day. “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” took place of “Mission Impossible 4”enjoying most screening times of 14% market share since 10th Feb. The others listed in the chart above took 7% for each film.

In the upcoming Week (Feb 13- 19, 2012), films as below are set to be released in mainland China. Including Huayi Brothers’“Love”, directed by Doze Niu with an all-star cast. Another Valentines’ Day theme film “Truth or Brave”, distributed by Bona Film will hit the screen on 14th Feb.
