Week 46 Preview: Romance Avoids 'Singles' Day'
According to Enbase’s China film boxoffice statistics, six films below will be released in Mainland China in the 46th week (Nov. 10-16). Two romances, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart 2” and “The Best Plan Is No Plan” will debut on the so-called Chinese “Singles’ Day”, which seize the timing of the yearly online shopping carnival and consuming explosion. As the sequel of “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” in 2011, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart 2” highlights its all-star cast, such as Louis Koo, Daniel Wu and Gao Yuanyuan, etc. “The Best Plan Is No Plan”, an all-Hong-Kong production of Sun Entertainment, has famous siblings on Mainland Chinese market such as “Kung Fu Jungle”, “The Man From Macau” and so on. On Wednesday of the 46th week, Nolan’s “Interstellar” will strike the "sentimental” atmosphere early this week, starting its domination in upcoming days. There will be three more films opening, including a Dreamworks animation, “Penguins of Madagascar”, on Friday, November 14. The rest films are thrillers, “Haunted Road” and “Mystery”.
The box office victory of “Love Is Not Blind” has caused attentions about marketing for the new fashion of celebrating Chinese “Singles’ Day”. According to Enbase’s China film boxoffice statistics, the low budget comedy & romance earned $55.41million in roughly five weeks since November 8, 2011. As it was set for a “Singles’ Day” launching, its box office took 67.3% of the daily market share on November 11, 2011. Also, “Love Is Not Blind” forcibly occupied 98% of the volume of romance genre. The market disappointedly shrank in the following “Singles’ Days” of year 2012 and 2013, when affectional films didn’t expand as assumed. In 2012, the “Singles’ Day” box office cumed $9.82million, dropping $1.6million. The top 1 love story, “Natural Lovers”, only gained $470,000. Year 2013 also saw box office slide on the “Singles’ Day” with $7.94million in total while romances took $1.47million. The top 1 romance "Love You For Loving Me" was still weak at $710,000 on November 11, 2013,.
