Week 43 Preview: Lucy Opens and Classic Returns

According to Enbase’s China film boxoffice statistics, 13 films below will be released in Mainland China in the 43rd week. The imported blockbuster, “Hercules: The Thracian Wars” will open this week’s boxoffice competition with domestic drama “Factory Boss” on Tuesday. Rarely, documentaries: “Feiyu Show”, presented by iQiyi, etc. and “African Safari” will be shown on October 23 and 24 respectively. On Friday, the classic comedy series of Stephen Chow, “A Chinese Odyssey” and “A Chinese Odyssey Part 2: Cinderella” will celebrate the 20th anniversary on screens with the fans of "Mou lei tau” style. Another powerful rival onto stage will be “Lucy”, leading by Scarlett Johnson, with a subverting “beauty goddess” image to most Chinese audiences. Altogether with the above films, two romances: “Five Minute to Tomorrow”, “Sex Apeal”, a crime and suspense “Target”, an animation “Shen Jian Chuan Qi”, a thriller “Midnight Garage” and a Kungfu film “Hero of the River” will start their debuts on the 43rd week in Mainland China. 

Based on indexes from three online movie fans communities: Douban, Mtime and Sina Weibo Film, “Lucy” earned the highest expectations on Douban’s “Want to watch” column, which its number reached 22006 by October 17.  Comparing to 1352 “Want to watch” and 2618 “Likes” from the Mtime members and Weibo users respectively, ''A Chinese Odyssey Part 2: Cinderellla” had the most averagely high support before re-screening. Its fans reached 9273 on Douban and 5233 on Sina Weibo Film when the Mtime counting 5987, leading in the Top 5 films.  As a film from the same series, “A Chinese Odyssey” gained a fairly less focuses than its sequel. With topping the 12872 Weibo Likes, “Five Minutes to Tomorrow” saw a large amount of fans through the SNS promotion. The Hollywood blockbuster “Hercules: The Thracian Wars” was the most steady and lowest welcoming film among the Top 5 with only 1424 from Douban, 468 from Mtime, and 1060 from Weibo.
