Mainland Box Office Chart in the Fifth Week 2012

According to China film box office statistics by enbase, mainland box office gross in the fifth week (Jan 30, 2012- Feb 05, 2012) reached $61.62 million, down 18% from last week. Moviegoers in this week counted as 11.46 million in total, slumped 19% compared to last week. 

 "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” continued its rule in mainland market with gross of $39.38 million over its second week release, followed by “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” with $3.56 million. “The Viral Factor” stayed in the third place with gross of $2.85 million. Movies in top three spots of mainland box office chart in last week maintained their dominant position which ranked in the same place of that in this week. Thanks to Tom Cruise and Robert Downey, Jr., box office gross of imported films accounted for 75% in mainland market in the fifth week of 2012.

China has just come out of the Lunar New Year holiday time slot which is traditionally a boom period for cinemas, box office gross is down 18% from last week, while up 25% compared to the week that straight after 2011’s Lunar New Year holiday. That should thank to "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” which contributed the most high gross in this week, accounted for 63.9% in mainland market in this week. This Hollywood blockbuster stayed in top spot for another week, adding $39.38 million for mainland total of $55.21 million over nine days run. This franchise film has lasted for 15-year long and it is regarded as a classical action movie serious by wide range of generations. This time Tom Cruise has put a lot into the film as an actor — running up and down the Dubai skyscraper was something no star outside of Jackie Chan would do. The film reached a global gross of $626 million, making “Ghost Protocol” the highest-grossing film of Tom Cruise’s long career. 

Swept by “Mission Impossible 4”films from the box office top 10 chart are down 50% in terms of weekly gross. “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” took in $3.56 million in this week while it has accumulated $27.69 million over four weeks run. Take a look at the domestic films side, “The Viral Factor” took over number one spot among local films, adding $2.85 million for total of $19.07 million over 20 days run. Johnny To's gangster film "Life without Principle" debuted a mild $2.27 million within three days release due to its poor audience attendance. “Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf” grossed $25.39 million over 25 days run and it has set a new record of box office in this animated franchise film since its first entry in year 2009. Another animated film “The Monkey King 3D”added $0.81 million for total of $7.49 million over 26 days run.

According to statistics by enbase, “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” dominated screening time slot in this week, enjoying 37% of screening time slot share.  “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows”, “The Viral Factor” and “Perfect Two” took the same 7% of screening time schedule share. Another hit “Life without Principle” also enjoyed 7% of that even considering its short three-day run in theaters. Audience attendance rate of “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” doubled that of the other films which listed in the chart above. 

In the upcoming Week (Feb 06- 12, 2012), films as below are set to be released in mainland China, including another film “Romancing in Thin Air 2”directed by Johnny To.
