According to China film box office statistics by enbase, mainland box office gross in the fourth week (Jan 23, 2012- Jan 29, 2012) reached $74.94 million, up 82% from last month. Moviegoers in this week counted as 14 million in total, soared 78% compared to last month.
Released by the end of Lunar Chinese New Year time slot, “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” got a very impressive score with $15.74 million over just two days run and swept the other competitors winning the top spot this week, followed by “Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows” with $10.73 million. “The Viral factor” dropped to the third place, adding $8.83 million for mainland total of $16.13 million over 13 days screened. Box office gross of domestic films accounted for 57% of ticket sales in the mainland in the fourth week of 2012.
Though the release schedule was postponed in mainland market, “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” debuted strong record of $15.74 million over just two days run since premiered by the end of Lunar New Year of 2011. This Hollywood blockbuster is highly expected since there is no big-hit released that could compete with “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” during this time slot in mainland film market. Star power of Tom Cruise really accounted for its unsurprised hit. It also benefited from the 30 minutes of footage in the IMAX format, including scene of Tom Cruise scaling the tallest building in the world. “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” is the third feature film contained footage shot in the IMAX format after “batman prequel: The Dark Knight” (2008) and “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” (2009) tried. It appears that this format is the future for action movie. In worldwide, this sequel also got a marvelous record of $570 million, including grossed $203 million from North America. It’s pretty clear that the entire IMAX strategy is meant to reinvigorate a franchise that took a big hit with its last entry. With its outstanding performance, “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” is deemed as the first blockbuster of year 2012 in mainland China market.
Six-day long Lunar New Year holiday helped to boom film market. Thanks to the release schedule of “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” postponed, “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” ruled the market before Tom Cruise turned up on the silver screens. "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” ranked in the second spot earning $10.73 million, its accumulated gross reached $23.99 million. Huayi Brothers’ “The Viral Factor” dropped to the third place with $8.83 million while its total gross crossed $16.13 million. Another highly expected film “The Great Magician” added $6.37 million for mainland total of $24.97 million over three weeks run. The latest release of “Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf” franchise took in $5.87 million, slightly down 4% compare to its score in last week. Another animated film “The Monkey King 3D”grossed $2.16 million in this week, a surprisingly 34% box office growth compared to that of last week.
Lunar New Year comedy “Fan Ju Ye Feng Kuang” directed by wide-known comedy director Shangjing, grossed a mild $4.31 million this week. Compare to last year’s Lunar New Year comedy “My Own Swordsman”(2011), which was also filmed by Shangjing, “Fan Ju Ye Feng Kuang”has no basis for attracting audiences who were fond of the same TV drama series that adapted from. Thus it no surprise that the opening week gross of “Fan Ju Ye Feng Kuang”is much lower than that of “My Own Swordsman”(2011), accounted for 40% compared to that of last year’s release.
Take a look at the Lunar New Year time slot in year 2011 (Feb 2- Feb 8, 2011). Total box office gross of that period reached $48.7 million. The most three valued contributors to box office were three hits, including “All's Well Ends Well 2011”(2011), “My Own Swordsman”(2011) and “What Women Want”(2011). Compared to last year, the same time slot in year 2012 which meant this week, total box office gross is way higher than last year’s , up estimated 48% relatively.
According to statistics by enbase, “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” and “The Viral Factor”both enjoyed 12% of screening time slot in this week, “All's Well, Ends Well 2012”and “Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf”both took 11% of that. Highly anticipated “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” had a strong performance, enjoying 10% of screening time slot, though it just been released for two days.
