Mainland Box Office Chart in third Week 2012

According to China film box office statistics by enbase, mainland box office gross in the third week (Jan 16, 2012- Jan 22, 2012) reached $41.14 million, showing 14% down from last month. Moviegoers in this week counted as almost 7.95 million in total, 12% slumped compared to last month.

"Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows” dramatically rebound to the top spot with $10.4 million box office income in its second week in mainland, followed slightly by “The Viral Factor” with $7.27 million. “The Great Magician” drop to third place, adding $7.05 million for mainland total of $18.6 million. Box office gross of domestic films account for 65% of total ticket sales in this market in the third week of 2012.  

"Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” climbed to the top spot with $10.4 million this week after debuting $2.86 million in just one day in last week. Director Guy Ritchie’s sequel costarring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law inherited action-suspense feature while it emphasized on the action part. The sequel performed much better than its predecessor, which has already surpassed “Sherlock Holmes” within eight days in terms of box office, so far it accumulated to $13.26 million in mainland. And it no doubt to continue dominating locally before “Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol” release. Distributed by Huayi Brothers, film“The Viral Factor” starring Taiwan’s superstar Jay Chou and Hong Kong’s actor Nicholas Xie, taking in $7.27 million over six days run. The double star power is a major factor which elated funs buying ticket. And Hong Kong director Dante Lin who is well-known for his action films, is another selling point for audience. The very tension story and eye catching gunplay scenes are appealing to viewers. 

The champion of last week “The Great Magician”and the second one from last week “Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf 2012”are both pulled down by “Sherlock” and “Viral Factor”to the third and fourth place with $7.05 million and $6.09 million respectively, also both slumped 40% from that of last week. Produced by LeTV Pictures and directed by Raymond Huang, New Year movie “All’s Well Ends Well 2012”is the sixth installment of the All’s Well Ends Well series, which began in 1993. In this year“All’s Well Ends Well 2012”was released on the same day in Asian-Wide and it scored $2.15 million over three days run in mainland market. “Guo Nian Hui Jia” staring Wen Zhang, who is widely known by mainland audiences since he starred in the hit “Love is Not Blind”, took in $0.88 million in five days.
The two local blockbusters of 2011“The Flowers of War” and “Flying Swords of Dragon Gate”are both set to meet their endings. These two earned $0.58 million and $0.76 million respectively in this week and expected to suck in $600 million and $550 million respectively as final scores.

According to statistics by enbase, “Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf” ruled the screening time slot in this week, enjoying the most 19% of that, though it suffered a flat audience attendance rate. “Sherlock Holmes 2”took 18% screening time schedule. “The Viral Factor”and "The Great Magician” both held 15% of that. 

In the upcoming Week (23-29, Jan 2012), films as below are set to be released in mainland China. It will be a narrow week for these competitors.
