Week 1: 'Police Story' Hangs on, 'Personal Tailor' Strong
According to statistics from EBOT EntGroup Box OfficeTracker, the mainland box office gross of the 1st week(December 30, 2013-January 5, 2014) was ¥480 million ($80 million), a 15% decrease compared to previous week and dropped 8% y-o-y. Moviegoers this week totaled 13.77 million.
Jackie Chan's Police Story 2013 brought in $72.31 million in thirteen days, sharing 33.5% of the market for the past week. In the face of investor skepticism, Personal Tailor proved to be a huge success for Huayi Brothers Media. After eighteen days in release, the comedy grossed $106.68 million at the box office and had already broken the record of Feng Xiaogang's highest grosser Aftershock ($98.14 million, 2010). Up in the Wind earned $9.37 million in third place and As the Light Goes out scored $5.44 million in fourth. With Chinese actress Huangyi in a supporting role, Legendary: Tomb of the Dragon opened to $4.65 million in five days. Rescheduled Olympus Has Fallen added $4.55 million for a cume of $5.82 million. China was another disappointing market for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, which took $2.56 million through three days' running in mainland theaters.
With a $9 million decrease from the same period in last year, the first week of 2014 was a bit underperforming in the film market. The annual gross stands at ¥21.77 billion, unfortunately less than the ¥22 billion prediction of the Chinese media outlets. It is worth noting that for the first time domestic productions moved past foreign flick through the whole year.
