Week 46: 'Thor' Still Reigns, 'Red 2' Not Bad

2013/11/19 17:14:00(Beijing Time)    by: EntGroup Consulting

According to statistics from EBOT EntGroup Box Office Tracker, the mainland box office gross of the 46th week (November 11-17) was about ¥330 million ($54 million), a slight 5% drop compared to last week's box office and a 57% increase y-o-y. Moviegoers this week totaled 9.56 million.

The Bruce Willis-starrer Red 2 opened to third place with a very impressive $5.85 million haul. Excape Plan continued to perform strongly in its second week in theatres, raking in $13.25 million for an aggregate $34.26 million total. But neither of these strong performances came anywhere close to topping Thor: The Dark World, which added $24.93 million for a new ten day cume of $46.25 million. As of last Sunday, the superhero sequel had managed to rule over the mainland film market for all ten days in release and hasn't made room for any other newcomers. Last week's third place finisher Hotel Transylvania took a sizable hit, dropping to sixth place with just $1.83 million in the past seven days.

The Thor sequel's momentum still remained with newly-added gross of $24.93 million, which was up 17% compared to its opening box office. There were eleven imported films which grossed more than ¥300 million in China last year, while Thor 2 will be the eleventh to move past the record in 2013. Among the Avenger franchise films, the top three box office performers are currently Iron Man 3, The Avengers and Thor: The Dark World.

Due to the delayed release of Olympus Has Fallen, Red 2 became the only new foreign film released last week. Considering the $5.06 million total of Red in 2010, the actioner was not expected to be a big draw. And although it had been in release for fourteen days' running, Lionsgate's Escape Plan has proved it still has enormous audience appeal in mainland cinemas. Escape Plan is the second high mainland grosser for Sylvester Stallone, after The Expendables 2 ($53.05) in 2012. Anyway, It is a big year for Lionsgate worldwide.

Mainland-made Love You for Loving Me brought in $2.6 million last week, rising to fouth place with a market share of 4.8%. Three days in release, My Boyfriends and Bu Bu Zhui Hun earned $0.75 million and $0.49 million respectively. Former champ Stalingrad struggled to take $0.45 million, one-nineteenth of its first week haul.
