Mainland China Box Office Performance in Week 41
According to China Box-office statistics by enbase, the mainland Box-office gross in Week 41 (Oct 3- Oct 9, 2011) reached $37.18 million, showing a 10% box-office growth from last month and a 2% decline compared to the same time last year. Moviegoers in this week counted as 7.48 million in total, went up about 12% compared to last month. The first five days of this week are the National Day holidays and the box office preformed pretty well. “Mural” won the weekly box office with an outstanding $12.73 million in its second week, followed closely by "The Sorcerer and the White Snake "with $12.17 million. “The Dragon Knight” was box office Top 3 with $2.73 million. As expected “Sanctum” finally crossed the $17.05 million Mainland China ticket sales. Domestic films enjoyed 82% market share by box office this week.
As a result of the quite fierce competition between “Mural” and “The Sorcerer and the White Snake” in the film market during the National Day holidays, “Mural” has quickly caught up with “The Sorcerer and the White Snake” in the box office, with a weekly gross of $12.73 million while the latter nabbed a slightly lower second spot at $12.17 million. As the common view in this industry, China box office is in a rocky growth and capital is flowing to this field. Nonetheless, Mainland film market is facing some tough problems which may lead to unhealthy competition in the future. Such as the drastic “War of Words” between “Mural” and “The Sorcerer and the White Snake ”on the micro-blog to defame each other, spreading sarcastic commentaries to mock the other competitor. The situation that the box office performed poorly during the Golden Week is also caused concerns within the industry. The flat-rate imported film “Sanctum” has reached $17.05million in Mainland China ticket sales, benefited from its solid reputation. Based on the video game of the same name, the film “The Dragon Knight” was a sleeper hit with total gross at $4.70 million.
