Weekend Report: 'Thor' Sequel Hammers $20 Million Debut

Thor: The Dark World opened to $20.35 million this weekend, while a bunch of domestic rom-coms struggled to share a part of the ticket sales. The three-day box office total was $36.3 million, up 54.5 percent from the previous week. Foreign films accounted for over 80 percent of the weekend gross.

This weekend is so-called "Singles' Day Movie Season" after the phenomenal success of Love Is Not Blind in 2010. Similar to the sales extravaganza in e-tailers, a dozen of domestic films were opening on the same day of November 8, trying to get a piece of the box office receipts. That means they would lose quickly, unless they have good storylines and big stars.
