Week 44: 'Stalingrad,''Hotel Transylvania' Posts Solid Debuts

According to statistics from EBOT EntGroup Box Office Tracker, the mainland box office gross of the 44th week (October 28-November 3) was close to ¥250 million ($40 million), a small 2% drop compared to the number of previous week and increased 18% y-o-y. Moviegoers this week totaled 7.21 million.

3D WWII epic Stalingrad quickly grabbed the weekly box office crown with $8.28 million after four days in release. Sitting in the second place, The Wolverine added another $6.59 million for a solid cume of $39.71. Sony's Hotel Transylvania raked in $5.71 million during its opening three days, which helped the animated movie's overseas revenue move past $200 million mark. Home-made actioner Special ID brought in $3.48 million, pushing its aggregate gross up to $24.68 million.

For the very first time, a film from neither China nor America opened number one in the mainland market. Nearly $8.3 million over four days, Fedor Bondarchuk's 3D war epic Stalingrad successfully made the history. Producer Alexander Rodnyansky gains much confidence, as he said to The Hollywood Reporter earlier this week,"The success of Stalingrad is a convincing testament to the fact that an alliance between Russian filmmakers, Imax technology and Hollywood studios can create films that will be appreciated by audiences in multiple markets."

Although it seems the top 10 films peformed quite well last week, the box office receipts nationwide has been decreasing for a second-straight week now. Admissions total ended up with 7.21 million during the past seven days.
