Week 20: 'American Dreams' Posts Magical Debut
According to entFilmbase’s China film box office statistics, the mainland box office gross in the 20th week of 2013(May 13-May 19, 2013) was about ¥350 million(about $57 million), decreased 24% compared to the previous week and a 54% increase y-o-y. Moviegoers this week totaled 10.22 million.
Peter Chan’s American Dreams in China hauled in $17 million during its opening three days. Robert Downey Jr.’s superman flick Iron Man 3 earned another $13.4 million in the past seven days, pushing its cume up to $110.86 million. Domestic hit So Young added $9.31 million for a new total of $109.52 million. Django dropped to NO. 6 in the weekly box office chart.
Comparing to last year, the mainland film market has witnessed a huge boom year-to-date. Through last Sunday, the national ticket sales total passed ¥840 million ($135.24 million), contributed by 240 million’s admissions total. The box office gross record of ¥920 million ($145.27) in July 31, 2012 may soon be broken in the very near future.
It had been a month after the release of DreamWorks’ The Croods until May 19, and there is no debating that it is a solid success. It ranked in the third place among all the animation films that ever been released in the Mainland China, just after Kung Fu Panda 2 ($95 million) and Ice Age: Continental Drift ($72.89 million).
HK director Peter Chan (Perhaps Love 2005, The Warlords 2007) has been working in the mainland for eight years, and now he finally make his Mainland dreams come true. Based on the story of famous New Oriental School, the film depicts how three Chinese men established a cram school in China. It has generated great buzz online. If you search the Chinese title 中国合伙人on Weibo.com, there will be around 1.7 million results related. Next week, actress Charlie Yeung’s directorial debut Christmas Rose will start its theatrical runs, which is surely to share a part of the box office revenue in Mainland China.
