According to entFilmbase’s China film box office statistics, the mainland box office gross in the 11st week of 2013(Mar. 11-Mar. 17, 2013) totaled ¥253million (about $40 million), down 6% compared to last week and up 33% y-o-y. Moviegoers this week totaled 7.36 million.

A Good Day to Die Hard, the fifth installment of the Bruce Willis action franchise, grabbed top spot with the opening-four-day gross of $15.78 million. Taking in $3.56 million on March 17, Resident Evil: Retribution climbed up to the fifth place in the weekly box office chart. The second was domestic comedy Princess and Seven Kung Fu Masters that earned $4.58 million during the past week. Upside Down brought in another $4.04 million, pushing its cume to $10.87 million. Adding $3.81 million for a new total of $195.5 million, the strong performance of Journey to the West is tapering off. Domestic flicks’ revenue percentage was 26%.

The time frame from March to April is always taken as an off season for the Chinese film market. As 2013’s first eleven weeks’ data shows, the ticket sales total continues decline after the Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day, which indicates that the mainland box office receipts are heavily affected by different movie seasons. Despite the release of two Hollywood high-budget flicks, A Good Day to Die Hard and Resident Evil: Retribution, total gross this week ended up with $40 million, 1/3 of the box office revenue generated in Week 7.

Upcoming films next week (Mar. 18-24): Starring Wu Xiubo and Tang Wei (aka Rebecca Tang, played in Lust, Caution), Seeking Mr. Right will hit the cinemas on March 21. An End to Killing, The Eighty-two A Strong Man and Ip Man: Final Fight are scheduled for March 22.
