Mainland Box Office Chart for Week 2, 2013
According to entFilmbase’s China film box office statistics, the mainland box office gross in the 2nd week of 2013(Jan 7-13, 2013) was ¥333.78million (about 53.07 million USD), drop 39% from the 1st week and increased 11% y-o-y. Moviegoers this week totaled 9.5 million.
Starring Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi, Wong Kar-wai’s The Grandmaster strongly grossed ¥162.4 million during its opening six days in Mainland China, while it also performed quite well in Hong Kong. CZ 12 added ¥80.7 million for a solid total of over ¥800 million. During this past week, homemade comedy Lost in Thailand earned another ¥56.55 million to pass the ¥1.2 billion milestones, while The Last Tycoon brought in ¥14.6 million for a new cume of ¥140.91 million.
After the hot Year-End movie season, the mainland film market endured a 39% decrease this week. Thanks to the debut of The Grandmaster, the weekly total gross still increased 11% y-o-y. The Grandmaster eventually hit the cinemas after four years’ shooting. Preparing for decades of years, director Wong Kai-wai tried hard to show us the meaning of traditional Chinese martial arts. In terms of words of mouth, public opinion differed quite a lot. Buzz generated by it had attracted a large number of moviegoers to go to the cinema, buy a ticket and find out what it really is. The Grandmaster earned ¥30 million on its opening day and over ¥35 million on Saturday. As of last Sunday, the action-biopic grossed ¥162.4 million in total in the Chinese mainland. Its box office revenue could be even higher if not the delay of IMAX release. In Hong Kong, it hauled in 8.06 million HKD in its opening four days.
Actioner CZ 12 sat on the second place of the weekly box office chart, adding a strong ¥80.7 million for a new record over ¥800 million. The much anticipating comedy Lost in Thailand passed ¥1.2 billion milestone through Saturday (Jan. 12, 2013), and its ticket sales hit ¥1.218 billion as of this Monday (Jan. 14, 2013). What may frustrate the Chinese filmmakers and moviegoers is that there exist some difficulties to beat James Cameron’s Avatar in a while. Three days in release, low-budget romantic flick Love in Time and Born to Love You brought in around ¥3 million. The total box office revenue of animation film The Grow reached ¥10.26 million in the past seven days.
The Chart “B.O. Market Share by City” shows that Top 15 cities took over 50% of the total box office receipts last week, 1/4 of which were taken by Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. In terms of B.O. Top 3 films, The Grandmaster enjoyed higher share than CZ 12 and Lost in Thailand, and the Top 5 cities (Guangdong, Beijing, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai) contributed 48.3% of the total box office.
For the 3rd week (Jan. 14-20, 2013), six films will debut in Mainland China. New Year movie Bring Happiness Home, The King of Comedy and Korea-produced The Thieves will start their theatrical runs on Jan. 15. Domestic actioner Beyond the Bounds will be release on Jan. 16, while on Jan. 18 Blame It on the Phone will debut. Distributed by China Film Group, domestic 3D animation Jungle Master will hit the cinemas on Jan. 19.
