"Hongyan Spirits," a play about a prison break that occurred before the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, will be staged at the National Center for the Performing Arts from Oct. 17 to 21 ahead of the upcoming 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

The play, adapted from the novel "Hongyan," tells the story of several CPC members who broke out of a prison and fought their captors, according to scriptwriter Liu Shen.

Director Jiang Tao said the play depicts a group of young heroes who give up their comfortable living conditions to pursue the true meaning of life.

The play is organized by the National Theater of China. A TV series of the same name will also be filmed in the near future.
