Mao Yu, Deputy Director of the Film Bureau of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT), said on September 15 that the bureau is planning to implement some policies to support domestic films, The Beijing Youth Daily reports.
During the Fifth Farmers Film Festival, Mao said SARFT will begin a special fund to encourage more cinemas to screen domestic productions very soon.
"Market shares of Chinese films have dropped to 30 percent since more foreign productions are accessing China," he told reporters during an interview.
China's box office sales totaled 8.07 billion yuan (US$1.28 billion) in the first half of 2012. In August, the market made over 10 billion yuan (US$ 1.583 billion). But it was the foreign blockbusters that drive the theatrical market.
Mao said that Chinese filmmakers should enhance the competitiveness of their movies. Meanwhile, the government will also find a way to encourage cinemas to screen more Chinese films.
