The 36th week (September 3 to September 9) box office revenue report that came out today says that the tally was 363 million yuan (US $ 57.354 million), which is 125 million yuan (US $ 19.75 million) less than the last week of August, Mtime.com reports.
Moreover, the numbers of the moviegoers dropped from 12.73 million to 10 million.
The situation belies the expectations of industrial professionals because they predicted that four Hollywood blockbusters would strongly boost the Chinese film market. However, they were wrong.
In less than 10 days, "Dark Knight Rises" and "The Amazing Spider-man" were released on August 27; "Prometheus" on September 2 and "Expendables 2" on September 4.
Some experts said that the start of school season and a drop in student audiences dented the revenues and added that "The Expendables 2" is only screened in 2D rather than 3D, which charges a higher ticket price.
