MPA Partners with China Intl. Copyright Expo

The Dec. 1-3 event aims to provide a master class on filmmaking, marketing, distribution and co-production opportunities between China and the the rest of the world.

It also offers a way for filmmakers to develop their careers, build networks and collaborate on projects.

The workshop has lined up luminaries from China and overseas to address the issues, including China Film Group topper Han Sanping; Xing Xing Digital Corp. prexy Wang Lifeng; Bona Film Intl. chief Yu Dong; Tang Lijun, managing director of the Shanghai Film Festival; Zhang Xun, prexy of the China Film Co-Production Corp. and Huayi Brothers' founder and chairman Wang Zhongjun.

Also taking part is Ira Deutchman, co-founder of Cinecom and Fine Line Features and chair of Columbia U's Film School; United Talent Agency agent and producer Bec Smith; Warner Bros. head of physical production Jon Kuyper, screenwriting teacher David Freeman; Lora Chen, who is principal consultant at China Media Consulting and a teacher at Beijing Film Academy; and scriptwriter-turned-helmer and associate professor at the Beijing Film Academy, Xue Xiaolu, who won the workshop's pitching competish in 2006.

Others addressing the workshop include Le-Vision Pictures CEO Zhang Zhao; Australian helmer-scribe Alister Grierson; Tropfest founder John Polson; multihyphenate Pauline Chan and the author of "The Independent Film Producer's Survival Guide," Harris E. Tulchin.

"Our film master class is a tremendous opportunity to engage with international film practitioners to share current trends, volunteer new ideas and participate in constructive debate. China is an exciting frontier for filmmakers, and a contemporary stage for bold and enterprising visions," said Mike Ellis, managing director and prexy of Asia Pacific MPA.

The filmmakers taking part were chosen by their local communities through various film-related competitions and exercises conducted by some of the region's leading film practitioners and institutions.

CICE is an international copyright industry forum and trade show in China, held annually since 2008. In 2012, the Expo will focus on the promotion and protection of content.
