Top Chinese director Chen Kaige has signed with CAA and will be repped out of Los Angeles and Beijing, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned.

Chen, who won the Palme d'Or in 1993 for Farewell, My Concubine, most recently directed Monk Comes Down the Mountain which has taken nearly $65 million at the Chinese box office.

Chen's point agent is in LA, and he will also be represented through CAA's Beijing office, which is headed up by Jonah Greenberg.

Earlier this month, Chen said that while the movie industry was booming in his country, local filmmakers needed to raise their standards if domestic films were to compete with Hollywood in the world's second largest market.

Monk Comes Down The Mountain is adapted from a novel by Xu Haofeng and is about a Taoist monk who resumes his secular life.

As well as the Palme d'Or, Kaige was nominated for two Oscars for Farewell, My Concubine, and his other major works include Emperor and the Assassin and Temptress Moon.
