Hong Kong Filmart: Filmko Inks 'Monkey King' Gaming Deal
Filmko Entertainment has closed a deal for a collaboration with Chinese game developer 37 Games for a game version of its upcoming blockbuster "The Monkey King 2".
The $72 million film, starring Aaron Kwok as the eponymous character and Gong Li as the White Bone Demon, is set for release on Feb. 8, 2016. Filmko has authorized the intellectual property rights of the film’s characters and storyline to 37 Games to create a game for their online platform and on mobile devices for $8 million.
The game will be released in November 2015. 37 Games is one of the three top gaming platforms in China, with 350 million registered users. The platforms has developed and made available to its users over 260 games.
The first "Monkey King" film, released in 2014, starred Donnie Yen as the titular character, Chow Yun-fat as the Jade Emperor of Heaven and Kwok as the Bull Demon King. The film grossed $182 million internationally. The second film sees Kwok switch from playing the antagonist to the Monkey King.
