'Big Hero 6′: No. 1 Animated Movie Worldwide 2014
Walt Disney Animation Studios is feeling all puffed up as "Big Hero 6" today became the No. 1 animated movie of 2014 with more than $621 million worldwide. Winner of the Oscar for Best Animated Film earned $221 million domestically plus more than $400 million at the international box office this weekend, the studio announced. Global box office runners-up included No. 2 "How To Train Your Dragon 2" (DreamWorks Animation/Fox) with $618.9 million and No. 3 "The Lego Movie" with $468.8 million (Warner Bros.).
Inspired by the Marvel comic books about a group of improbable heroes, "Big Hero 6" has also surpassed Tangled to become Disney’s third biggest animated release globally, after "Frozen" and "The Lion King". It’s also Disney Animation’s third biggest domestic release. In key foreign markets Japan and China, Big Hero has tallied more than $75 million and $51 million respectively. It’s also Disney’s highest-grossing animated release in China, surpassing Frozen. In Japan it’s the second-biggest grossing Disney animated release ever. The movie which opened in the U.S. on Nov. 7, 2014, was directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams and produced by Roy Conli. Screenplay was by Jordan Roberts, Daniel Gerson and Robert L. Baird.
