Chinese Blockbusters Nominated Worst Films
Chinese blockbusters are among the worst films nomination list for the Chinese version of the Golden Raspberry Awards.
The annual Sixth Golden Broom Awards, founded and organized by Cheng Qingsong, chief editor of Youth Film Handbook magazine, nominated "The Monkey King" by Cheang Pou-Soi, "Tiny Times 3" by Guo Jingming, "Breakup Guru" by Deng Chao, "Fleet of Time" by Zhang Yibai, and "The Man from Macau" by Wong Jing as candidates for the "most disappointing film of the year."
The five movies are among top 10 highest grossing movies in 2014; each grossed more than 500 million yuan (US$80.49 million). The other 15 nominees in the same category include "The White Haired Witch of the Lunar Kingdom" by Jacob Cheung and "The Crossing: Part 1" by John Woo.
Actors Donnie Yen, Nicholas Tse, Eddie Peng, Angelababy Yang Yin, Mark Zhao, Ivy Chen, Barbie Hsu, Lin Chi-ling, Yang Mi, Deng Chao and Huang Xiaoming were nominated as "most disappointing" actors and actresses.
The "most disappointing directors" nomination also included some once acclaimed names include John Woo, Guo Jingming, Deng Chao, Wong Jing and Jacob Cheung for their misfires in 2014.
The award will also select the "most disappointing middle and small budget movies" and "most disappointing screen writers."
The Golden Broom Awards is an attempt to mimic the Golden Raspberry Awards in the United States by voting for the worst films of the year. The Chinese movie industry has been developing very fast in recent years, but the progress has been marked by quantity rather than quality.
The winners will voted by internet users from Jan. 15 - Feb. 15. But until the fifth edition of the awards, no nominees showed up to accept the awards. Cheng Qingsong, the organizer, still hopes that someone will be brave enough to come to the award ceremony, facing the criticism in an amusing way. "But I don't know if anyone will come until the last minute," he said.
