Hong Kong Box Office Up By 1% in 2014
Box office in Hong Kong increased by 1% in 2014 to HK$1.65 billion (US$213 million) compared with HK$1.63 billion (US$210 million) in 2013.
The overall number of films receiving a theatrical release remained unchanged at 310, but the number of local films hitting theaters increased from 43 to 51, according to data from Hong Kong Box Office and the Motion Picture Industry Association.
The five top-grossing films were all Hollywood blockbusters, with “Transformers 4” the runaway winner, and a score of US$12.7 million (HK$98.2 million). But bawdy local comedy “Golden Chickensss” and gambling comedy “From Vegas to Macau” claimed sixth and tenth places in the overall box office chart with grosses of US$5.33 million (HK$41.3 million) and US$4.33 million (HK$33.6 million).
Other local films with strong performances included “The Monkey King,” “Overheard 3,” “The Midnight After” and “As the Light Goes Out.”
