'Apes' Demonstrates Natural Selection
HONG KONG – “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” swung straight to the top of the Chinese box office this weekend, it is approaching 50% market share.
With a wide release of over 7,000 screens it amassed $45.1 million over the week from Monday to Sunday (Aug. 25-31), according to data from local researcher Entgroup.
"How To Train Your Dragon 2", last week’s winner, saw earnings plummet 51% to $11.9 million and the picture drop to third place, on an 18 day cumulative score of $63.2 million.
That left Hong Kong-China martial arts epic “The Four 3” unchanged in second place with a strong hold. Weekly takings were $13.3 million, down 21%. That gives it a 10 day cumulative of $30.1 million.
Hong Kong real estate comedy “Temporary Family” also held up well, also shedding 21% as it dropped from third to fourth place. Weekly takings were $6.91 million, for an 11 day cumulative of $15.7 million.
Franco-Belgian animation, “Minuscule: Valley of the Lost Ants” improved ranking and gross receipts in its second frame. It added $2.38 million as it climbed from eighth to fifth spot, for a 10-day score of $4.18 million.
In sixth place, Hong Kong-Chinese actioner “Z-Storm” was the only other picture to take more than $2 million during the week. It now stands on a total of $15.2 million after 16 days.
