Berlin 2014: First Generation Titles Announced

God Help The Girl, the directorial debut of Belle & Sebastian singer Stuart Murdoch, the Australian family drama 52 Tuesdays and Broken Hill Blues from Swedish director Sofia Norlin are among the first dozen films picked for the Berlin International Film Festival's youth sidebar Generation.

The initial line-up includes two world premieres, both from Argentina: Matias Lucchesi’s Natural Sciences and Atlantida from director Ines Maria Barrionuevo. Cao Baoping's Einstein and Einstein, a drama about China's one-child policy and its impact on a single family, will have its European premiere in Berlin, as will South Is Nothing from Italian director Fabio Mollo, the Mexican musical drama We Are Mari Pepa by Samuel Kishi Leopo and the animated comedy Aunt Hilde! from A Cat in Paris director Jacques-Remy Girerd.
 
Rhys Graham's Galore, a tale of first love told against the backdrop of raging bushfires in Australia; Danish drama The Contest from Martin Miehe-Renard and Wolfy, the Incredible Secret, an animated tale about a courageous wolf and a timid rabbit from directors Gregoire Solotareff and Eric Omond, will all have their international premieres in the Generation section.
 
Generation chief programmer Maryanne Redpath will announce the full program for the 2014 event in January. As with previous years, the Generation section will be divided into films for older teens (Generation 14 plus) and the Generation Kplus section for films suitable for 14 and under. The winner of each competition line-up receives the section's Crystal Bear award.
 
In 2014, Generation screenings will move to the recently reopened Zoo Palast cinema in western Berlin as well as screening in the House of World Cultures. The 2014 Berlin International Film Festival runs Feb. 6-16.
