In a pre-American Film Market move, Shanghai-based Fundamental Films is opening offices in Los Angeles next month and has hired veteran exec Gary Glushon (pictured) as exec VP of development.
Glushon, who most recently served as VP of creative affairs at Will Smith and James Lassiter’s Overbrook Entertainment, will oversee development of the company’s recently unveiled English-language feature film slate. During his tenure, Glushon worked on “Seven Pounds,” “I Am Legend” and “The Karate Kid.”
The company’s current projects include “Replicas” by Chad St. John and “The Drop” by Jayson Rothwell. Fundamental Films also plans to have a presence at AFM.
“We want to strengthen our relationship with talent, and we look forward to Gary playing a prominent role,” said Mark Gao, chairman of Fundamental Films.
Fundamental revealed the English-language production slate last month, which includes a number of Sino-foreign co-productions. Fundamental will distribute them in China, in addition to its foreign film acquisitions and local productions.
Last month’s announcement touted “China Black Chamber” as the kickoff project on the slate. The company described “Chamber” as an espionage story about the infiltration of the Japanese intelligence in 1938 by an American spy recruited by the Chinese military.
The company also said last month that it was working with Thunder Road on the co-production of “A Gang Story,” an English-language remake of the French film “Les Lyonnais,” which will star Liam Neeson, along with “The Drop.”
Fundamental is currently in post-production on animated film “The Prince and the 108 Demons,” which Luc Besson’s Europacorp is selling internationally.
