It was revealed that comic actor-turned-director, Stephen Chow has been appointed as one of the members of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
According to Hollywood Reporter website, the 50-year-old "Kungfu Hustle" actor will be serving on one of the provincial arms of CPPCC in Guangdong Province.
His manager revealed, "Stephen has always been very interested in politics, and feels that it is an honour to become a member of the political advisory body. People may think that he is only a mere actor-director, but Stephen pays a lot of attention to issues outside the film industry."
The manager added that Stephen will start on his CPPCC duties after the conclusion of his latest directorial effort, "Journey to the West" promotions.
However, Stephen Chow is not the first celebrity ever to have been appointed as a political advisor in China. Actress Gong Li and "House of Flying Daggers" director, Zhang Yimou have been members of the CPPCC on the national level in the past. However, the former was highly criticised after being absent from meetings two years in a row.
