Good Universe Picks Comedy Spec 'Cherries' from Chinese DMG
Good Universe has acquired Jim and Brian Kehoe's R-rated comedy spec "Cherries" from Chinese media company DMG Entertainment, which will produce with "Harold & Kumar" creators Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, who are in negotiations to develop the project as a potential directing vehicle.
Good Universe had no comment regarding the extent of Hurwitz and Schlossberg's pending involvement.
"Cherries" follows three naive dads who set out to stop their daughters from making good on a pact to lose their virginity on prom night.
Exact producing credits have yet to be determined, but Hurwitz and Schlossberg will produce through their eponymous production company alongside DMG ("Iron Man 3"), whose CEO Dan Mintz and Motion Picture Group prexy Chris Fenton are also expected to be involved in a producing capacity along with Chris Cowles. Good Universe toppers Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane will likely exec produce.
"Cherries" represents DMG Entertainment's first internally developed project to hit the domestic marketplace since it quietly acquired the boutique management/production company H2F Entertainment. While no R-rated comedy has been theatrically released in China, DMG has managed to find success with censorship-prone pics such as "Looper," "Resident Evil 4" and the "Twilight" franchise.
"Cherries" also marks the second consecutive spec sale for the DMG-repped Kehoes, who sold "You Complete Us" to Endgame last year for Adam Shankman to produce with H2F. That project is slated to begin production next spring.
Though the pic is in early development, it has the potential to launch a comedy franchise, something with which Hurwitz and Schlossberg have plenty of experience. Duo created Mandate's successful "Harold & Kumar" series and most recently directed "American Reunion," the latest installment in Universal's "American Pie" franchise.
CAA reps Hurwitz and Schlossberg, who are currently developing an untitled cop comedy written by Blake McCormick at Universal.
