Bona Takes U.S. Pic Pair for China
Bona Film Group has picked up Chinese distribution rights to a pair of U.S. titles ahead of AFM, nabbing Summit Entertainment's sequel to ensemble action hit "Red 2" and Emmet/Furla Films' thriller "Broken City," starring Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Beijing-based Bona, one of China's largest entertainment congloms, distributed 14 films in China last year. Last week it announced a co-production and international distribution pact with Fox Intl. Prods.
Box office receipts in China increased nearly 30% in 2011 to more than $2 billion, making China the world's third-largest film market behind the U.S. and Japan. Growth is expected to accelerate, moving China into the No. 2 slot in just a few years.
Fox will release "Broken City" in the U.S. in January. "Red 2," sequel to the $199 million worldwide grosser in 2010, will be released Statside next August.
Emmett/Furla confirmed the distribution deal; a Summit spokesman declined to comment.
