According to enFilmbase’s China film boxoffice statistics, mainland boxoffice gross in the 35th week (Aug 27-Sep 02, 2012) reached $77.07 million, a robust growth of 59% from last week. Moviegoers this week totaled 12.73 million, for an increase of 40% when compared to last week’s numbers.
Along with “Prometheus”, “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “The Dark Knight Rises” Hollywood blockbusters reigned supreme the boxoffice market in mainland China over this past week. “The Amazing Spider-Man” topped the weekly boxoffice chart, raking in $35.4 million over seven days in release, while the fourth installment of “Spider Man” series has totaled $35.85 million as of last Sunday. “The Dark Knight Rises” debuted to the second place with $33.83 million over seven days in release. “Prometheus” collected $4.59 million in its opening day, sitting in the third place of the chart. This week, mainland boxoffice was undeniably dominated by a string of Hollywood titles, which accounted for 96% of the weekly total gross.
As mainland audiences had been waiting for long time to enjoy Hollywood titles, with a bunch of Hollywood blockbusters finally got released this past week, mainland boxoffice market warmly welcomed the last hurrah of this summer. Thanks to the marvelous opening of the three smash hits, which including “Spider Man”, “Batman” and “Prometheus”, the whole mainland China boxoffice market saw a huge surge over the past week, earning $77.07 million at boxoffice, which is now the second highest grossing week in 2012, just sitting behind the week 15 (grossed $85.74 million), in which week “Titanic 3D” started its theater run.
"Spider Man” and “Batman” were scheduled to release on the same day-August 27. “Spider Man” actually came out slightly ahead: the movie scored an incredible $35.85 million since it debuted. That’s more than “Spider Man 3” made in its entire run here, which is due to the rapid expansion of the market and the addition of 3D screens.
The conclusion to Christopher Nolan’s “Batman” trilogy hauled in $34.21 million since it debuted in mainland China, acclaiming waves of applauses from viewers as well as big commercial success at boxoffice.
Though “Spider-Man” enjoyed wider release than “Batman”, which caused by that the film screened in 2D, 3D and IMAX theaters (“Batman” only has 2D and IMAX formats), the “Spider Man” was beaten up by the “Batman” in terms of average admissions per screen.
Another Hollywood title “Prometheus” got debut on last Sunday, opening to third place with $4.59 million.
According to enFilmbase statistics, “Spider Man” and “Batman” teamed up to ruled over mainland boxoffice screenings, enjoying 35% and 34% of the market share in terms of total number of screenings respectively, followed by “Prometheus” and “The Bullet Vanishes”, which took in 3% for each title.
Next week (Sep. 03-09, 2012), the films below will be released in Mainland China. Another Hollywood hit “The Expendables 2” is about to start its theater run on September 4. The flick is highly-anticipated to draw serious interests from male audiences by bringing together a large group of past-and-present action stars in to one movie. Furthermore, along with "Spider Man” and “Batman”, the three Hollywood blockbusters are likely to leave the boxoffice market little room for any other domestic films in the coming week.
