Matt Damon is still putting in full-press promotional duties for Jason Bourne, opening in North America Friday. But viewers in China are already getting an early look at the actor's next big release: The Great Wall.
Described as a 3D science fantasy adventure-monster period action film, The Great Wall's first trailer is just as visually impressive as that mishmash of genres would suggest.
Directed by legendary Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers), the film stars Damon, Willem Dafoe, Pablo Pascal and several of Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China's biggest names, including Andy Lau, Lu Han, Eddie Peng, Jing Tian and more.
A co-production between Legendary Entertainment and Chinese film companies Le Vision Pictures and China Film Group, the film is said to have been made on a production budget of $160 million, making it the biggest movie collaboration between the U.S. and China ever.
The producers have been mostly mum on the story so far, but the film is said to be about the mysteries revolving around the origins of the Great Wall of China during the Northern Song Dynasty, some 1,000 years ago. Zhang has described the film as having a realistic style, despite the central appearance of an ancient Chinese monster.
The film will be released in North America by Universal Pictures on February 17, 2017. Chinese viewers will get to see the film a couple of months sooner, however. China Film Group is handling the Chinese release in December 2016.
