Movie and theatre producers often complain that an outstanding script is hard to find. But now there seems to be a new solution to the problem. A screenplay competition has been launched by Peking University, in a bid to encourage young playwrights in China.
Co-created by theatre director Tian Qinxin and the Institute of Film, Television and the Theatre of Peking University, the project entitled "New Writing" is a new form of competition among young playwrights. All applicants' scripts will be viewed and ranked by professionals, and the top 10 candidates will qualify for the final round. 6 selections from these finalists will be chosen to attend a one-month training program at the National Theatre of Scotland.
Tian said:" The UK is not only the hometown of Shakespeare, but also an innovative country in the world of theatre. I hope this project will support and help the talented playwrights in China."
The 6 winners' scripts will be fully revised and rehearsed during their stay in Scotland. The hope is that they will meet audiences on stage next year, both in the UK and China. Tian hopes that this will be a new platform for the writers to promote their undiscovered efforts.
